The Evenflo Easy Walk Thru Top of Stairs Gate is appropriate for either the top or bottom of stairs, doorways, or hallways. With a one-hand release, it can be opened or closed while holding baby. It also has a red-green indicator noting when the gate is properly locked. It expands from 29" to 42" wide and is 30" tall but can be installed 3" above the floor for 33" of height coverage.
It is a screw-mounted gate, so will take great care with assembly but will have a sturdier fit over pressure-mounted gates which aren't appropriate for the top of a staircase. Equipment necessary for install includes: an electric drill, a 9/64" drill bit, a screwdriver and a pencil. A level is also a good idea to make sure that it is installed true for a durable assembly and best fit. It can be made to swing in either one or both directions, but has a removable swing-stop mechanism that prevents it from swinging out over the top of the stairs.
